Go ahead. Eat your face off. It’s Arizona Restaurant Week.

Criollo

It’s no secret that my agency is working behind the scenes on this this year’s Arizona Restaurant Week — helping to make it bigger and better for diners and restaurants alike. People keep asking me for a prescribed itinerary. So here you go, a list of must-visit spots.

See some obvious picks missing? Well I thought I’d leave my clients out of the post — hell, there are plenty of amazing restaurants in the state that I don’t represent –yet.

Get your gourmand game day face on and let’s eat.

Criollo Latin Kitchen – Pictured above. It’s a rare occasion. You sit at a restaurant, pick up the menu and immediately want to order one of everything. Head north to Flagstaff and drop into Criollo Latin Kitchen to enjoy a must-order-everything experience. (While you’re there, visit their sister restaurant Brix. Both are destination-worthy  spots.)

Roka Akor – Butterfish Tataki for a starter? Done. Go here.

Feast – This really belongs on a wish list. I’ve never been, but many trusted foodniks fantasize about return visits to this southern AZ belle. If you go, also stop by Scott & Co. for cocktail nirvana.

Tommy V’s Urban Kitchen & Bar – In the location previously occupied by Café Caramaba near Old Town Scottsdale, this new Tommy V’s is victorious. My colleague and front-of-the-house aficionado Zoran Kilsara delivers a polished service backed by menu of Italian favorites. You’ll love it, promise. Hi Zoran!

Talavera – Anyone renting a spare bedroom in north Scottsdale? I’ll happily take up a second residence in the north Valley just to be nearer to Chef Mel Mecinas. His two-night pop-up restaurant at Cycle was outstanding. Back on his home turf at Talavera, he’s definitely one of my culinary crushes.

St. Francis – For some reason, people think I’m not a St. Francis fan. Wrong. To the contrary, I probably visit this restaurant once a month. Walking into the space is like putting on a stylish suit. You feel like a million bucks. Chef Aaron Chamberlin’s stellar food keeps this fashionable spot on the foodnik rotation.

Noca. – Chef Matt Taylor, I love you. There. I said it. Welcome home… now let’s eat.

My top five recommendations for Spring Arizona Restaurant Week

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Yup. I’m sending my gourmand garments (eatin’ dress + drinkin’ shawl) to the dry cleaners ASAP. The Arizona Restaurant Association is launching the first-ever, Spring Arizona Restaurant Week starting this Friday and over 80 Phoenix-area restaurants want you to eat your face off for 10 days, May 13th-22nd.

I’m sharing my top picks plus menu highlights via the food blog. If you do check them out, write a comment below and let me know how much you loved ‘em. TIP: Make your reservations quick… before the broadcast media informs the general public!

Yes, I’ll be out and about. Catch me on twitter at @JuxtaPalate.

Citizen Public House
Chef Bernie Kantak simply isn’t capable of making a bad dish. He’s my current culinary crush. His eclectic fare helped put Cowboy Ciao on the map and now his own restaurant has caused quite a buzz in the foodnik community.

  • 1st: Original Chopped Salad
  • 2nd: Pork sirloin w/ sweet potato puree, chevre, braised figs, apple jus
  • 3rd: Anything really. They’re all terrific.

Zinc Bistro
With the closing of Metro Brasserie, Zinc Bistro has reclaimed the top spot for French in the East Valley. Oui, the drive from Tempe is a pain, but necessary for great Frenchy eats.

  • 1st: Smoked Salmon Pissaladiere
  • 2nd: Porkloin, Cauliflower “Risotto”, Cherry Brussel Spouts
  • 3rd: Beignets, Blackberry Coulis, Milk jam, Vanilla whip Cream

Beckett’s Table
Easily the most talked about restaurant in 2010/11, Beckett’s Table is a must-go if you haven’t been. This month, Phoenix Magazine called it “…one blockbuster of a restaurant.” Nuff said.

  • 1st: Super creamy grits n schreiner’s sausage trio: whole grain mustard, arugula, smoked onions
  • 2nd: Roasted red pepper “cannelloni”: ratatouille, almond puree
  • 3rd: Award winning fig and pecan pie: cream cheese citrus zest ice cream
  • 4th: (YES an addition!) Each SpringARW guest will leave with a signature bag of Beckett’s Table Pumpkin Seed Brittle and a voucher good for a free dessert on their next visit

NOCA
Shame on me for not eating here more frequently. Shame on you if you’ve never been. They’re in the limited company of Valley restaurants with near flawless service and extraordinary fare.

  • 1st: Crispy Squid: Cannellini Bean Salad, Preserved Lemon, Parsley, Caper Berries, Chili Oil
  • 2nd: Rotin: White Wine Braised Pork Sugo, Fennel Pollen, Stagionato
  • 3rd: Passion Fruit & Coconut: Almond Dacquoise, Passion Fruit Anglaise, Coconut Sorbet, Meringue Sheets

Atlas Bistro BYOB
Quite possible the best restaurant you’ve never been to. Hidden inside the AZ Wine shop on Scottsdale Road, Atlas rewards true foodniks with a daily changing menu. Yup, its OK to geek out here.

No menu available, but just make that rezzo. Trust me.

Quick 4: Your “must-go” spots for Arizona Restaurant Week

Saturday, September 18th, 2010

It is here. Toss out the skinny jeans and dust off the eatin’ dress. (Sorry Gwen, the gourmand garb is JxP territory! HAHA!)

Before we get started here’s a big tip: TIP! Please tip appropriately. During Restaurant Week, the food is discounted, but the appreciation for service shouldn’t be. If you’re second guessing, just double the tip.

Atlas Bistro — This is a wickedly under-appreciated gem in our city. It tops my Arizona Restaurant Week list, but should also be in the rotation of best restaurants in Arizona. BYOB is made easy with an epic wine shop next door. Make your reservations NOW. Last year, we had to pull some strings to get in during restaurant week.

Iruna* –The unstoppable indie restaurateur, Chef Aaron May (watch out Sam Fox) is flexing his culinary muscles as confidently as ever, serving destination-dining worthy Spanish tapas at an already affordable price point. Restaurant Week only sweetens the deal. Don’t miss the Pollo Colonial, Fliet Mingon, and one of my new favorite obsessions — the Marcona Almond Turron (Frozen almond souffle that takes like cereal and milk)!

Vincent’s – Cauliflower Soup with Chipotle Brioche Croutons. Lobster Omelette. Need I say more? With long history in the Valley, Vincent is still a prized chef and his charm-oozing spot on Camelback should regular repeat on your list of fave restaurants. PS — A weekend morning at his outdoor food market is culinary paradise.

Talavera at Four Seasons Resort — So much for keeping resorts off the list. Foodie pal EricEatsOut treated me to an amazing dinner here recently and I’ve been dreaming of it ever since. The AZRW menu doesn’t hold back with starters like Corn Bisque-Snow Crab, Bell Pepper and Fennel Pollen!

Forgive the “local rant,” but please, for the love of god, skip the chain-y spots. This is AZ Restaurant Week! Go for uniquely AZ spots!

(And no, I’m not one of those local everything in the universe people… Just this week.)

Oh and click over to Pen & Fork for even better-ly written strategies for AZRW. Gwen is great!

*The honest truth! Iruna is a client of mine, but as you know, I only work with the BEST! I hand pick who I work with and this place has the goods!

The new Up Agency: A labor of love, Malbec, and popovers.

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Its 10:11 on the night before I launch Up Agency and conquer the universe. I’m sleep deprived and malnourished from a diet of coffee and Trader Joe’s Malbec.

Our new Chief of Hospitality & Tourism, Nikki Buchanan is on her way back from a well deserved vacation in California.

Our new PR Overlord, Stacy Pearson just wrapped up her Sunday here at Rivers & Leaves Media Up Agency HQ.

Over the past few days, we’ve all been knee-deep in client work while planning an extensive comm plan for this announcement thing.

Honestly, this is the first time I’ve invested serious effort in my own business development since I opened Rivers & Leaves in 2008. All of my success is based on word of mouth (thanks to many friends/clients in the industry).

Hell. I didn’t have a business card until May of 2010. Never bothered with a logo. Nope, no web presence to speak of.

We were a faceless/nameless ghost for almost 3 years. When cold calls came in to the office, the first thing I would say was “Congrats for managing to get in touch with us, we’re notoriously difficult to reach!”

It was true.

I spent all my time building business for clients and no time on myself.

But now it’s bigger than me. Bigger than Rivers & Leaves.

Now it’s we. Team Up.

But, any modicum of success I’ve had in the past has always been due to the company I kept…

Ben McFadden, my programmer and web developer extraordinaire has been with me for 7 years. As a freshman in high school, he was one of my first interns. He was my Padawan who quickly exceeded the Jedi Master. When I moved to the software industry and needed a seasoned expert, he was my first pick (he was a senior in HS then). After jumping the silicon ship, I asked Ben to jump with me one more time.

He did. And here we are. He’s still with me and I owe him so much.

Then came John. And then went John. And then he came again. Just when I needed him the most, he was there. Personal assistant, savior, salsa dancer… what title hasn’t he earned? Somehow you put up with my craziness. Tolerated my insane ideas. And filtered my raw creativity into effective communications. You’ve been awesome, despite the nauseating McDonald’s bags in the office. You are praised, and forgiven. :-)

Luke, the only thing that could top having a communication Ph.D. and professor at my side is having a best friend by my side. Late night cigarettes and vodka have fueled many creative sessions over the years. Your endless encouragement kept me going during those 90-hour work weeks.

Adam. We still miss you, but you’ve certainly earned Honored Emeritus status. Especially when you strolled into the office today with a loaded serving tray to announce “I made fresh popovers for you two.” Stacy practically shit her pants in admiration when you walked up to the door with a plate of steamy baked goods, honey and butter. Rockstar.

And now the future…

Nikki, we’ve had a hell of a lot of fun these past few years. It’s only just begun. Thanks for taking a leap of faith with me and starting a new adventure together.

Stacy, “fresh popovers” is our version of “look at the Earth!” (an inside joke that I’m ironically not inside, but privy to).

But why look down at the Earth when we can look Up?

Flash forward to 6:09 a.m. today…

During my brainstorming session this morning (a.k.a. the shower), I realized I forgot to say thanks to the folks who made this all possible and will continue to make it possible in the future!

I’m sooooo fortunate to have a primo list of clients who trust me. Thanks for letting me help shape your businesses, products and services. Thanks for hearing out those doodles-on-bar-napkin ideas and trusting me to pull them off.

A statewide culinary event. A restaurant that let’s folks “come together.” A giant wine festival on a farm. “You Can Still Do Your Laundry Here Because I Love You” cookie collections. A talking/flying dog. Foursqaure mayors with true mayoral duties.

We’ll never run out of ideas. Promise.

People think it’s easy to partner with the best brands who already have great stories to tell to the public. I think it’s the opposite.

Working with the best means we have to be on our toes and kicking ass 24/7.

Thanks for partnering Up.

EVENT: Staff Meal with Chef Justin Beckett at Petite Maison.

invite

Petite Maison’s quaint quarters will have to squeeze in an extra table Friday night. Get a preview of the highly-anticipated Beckett’s Table restaurant as Chef Beckett (close friend and client) will be the guest chef at Staff Meal tomorrow!

I will be there schmoozing (perhaps boozing) with all that show up! See you there.

BBQ gig in Scottsdale… GO MEAT!

Friday, April 9th, 2010

My Saturday morning tennis clinic will burn about 20 pounds of my winter fat, leaving me famished. Luckily, I can reload the calories just a few hours later during the Arizona Barbecue Festival in Scottsdale.

The first-ever festival/competition promises 60 BBQ teams from across nation who will be slingin’ livestock onto plates for just $2 bucks a taste. Admission is only $10 (kids under 12 free).

The VIP dinner tonight is $150, but I already spent some serious dough at Binkley’s last weekend so I won’t be splurging on the premium ‘cue.

I don’t know shit about what makes good BBQ, but I’m ready to find out. At $10, there’s no reason why you’d even think of staying home this weekend. See you there.
