Returning to the motherland.

My apologies to everyone following my tweets and blog over the past two weeks. You’ve suffered through negative quips and bitches about the state of things in my life.

Things are looking a little brighter today so I thought I’d share some positive news.

I’m going to San Francisco!

Arizona apparently isn’t big enough for my binge eating so I’m off to my favorite food city for some much needed epicurean therapy. I’m aiming for the weekend of March 18th, but it may be postponed to April, depending on work schedule.

A friend recently returned from a “R&D” trip to San Fran. I’ll admit that my trip has similar purpose, but I’m also focused on having a good time.

Any recommendations? What do you love?

So many choices you might need to stay a month…or a year, ha!

My favorite is Zuni Cafe (the chicken with bread salad is a must) and @eatingagain also pointed me to Yank Sing for dim sum. I also loved Amber India.

    Have fun…recharge…hurry back :)

I go every year (my family lives there). I always try to visit:

Slanted Door – Ferry Building, cool looking restaurant. It's always on the list, no matter what.

a16 – They changed chefs since I was last there, but my brother says it's still great.

Chez Panisse – In Berkley, but worth the drive. Josh is mildly obsessed with it.

Zuni Cafe – Bloody mary's are amazing.

Aqua – It's where I fell in love with food. Real food.

Have to agree with Slanted Door – Ferry Building, cool looking restaurant. It's always on the list, no matter what. The Ferry Building is a food mecca in and of itself. Great place to wander.

I am headed to San Fran towards the end of May, and will be hitting up: Shanghai Dumpling King for Soup Dumplings – xiao long bao. I haven't been here myself, but had soup dumplings in Vancouver recently – and it is something I need to have (and can't get in Phx). This particular place got very good reviews recently, so will be on my list.

Sweet list, thanks! Zuni is one of Greg's fave picks too. I'll do a toast to you, my dear!

Great line up! I've dreamed about Chez Panisse for years. Thanks for the suggestions!

I'll see if my tour guide knows about Shanghai Dumpling King. I'm sure he does! I'll report back to you, sir. Thanks for the comments!

I also like Slanted Door, Tartine for a little sweetie. Missed Citizen Cake, which was closed over the holiday weekend I was there. Wah! Everyone raves about A16. I've always loved Swan Oyster Depot, so funky and fun. Quince, Little Star–people speak of these. I want to go, I want to stay, I want to eat.

Chefgwen is oh so right. Zuni. There's a reason why it's lasted this long. Great food. The chicken with bread salad is a must. Often imitated. Flavor never duplicated. And I do love Yank Sing for dim sum. Great selection. I also favor Kokkari (I think that's the spelling), a Greek restaurant with the best lamb chops I've ever had in my life. Great bread. Really, everything is stellar.

Oh, and Alembic (bar) in the Haight. They invented craft cocktails and the menu is reasonably priced. Great vibe!

It may be a bit out of your way, but try Tamarindo's in downtown Oakland. (It's about 4 blocks from the BART station on Broadway.) The Asada Jalisco and their homemade tortillas were divine.

La Ciccia (Noe Valley) is THE place to go to for wonderful Sardinian food and wine. Superb! http://www.laciccia.com/

On my last trip Acquerello (Nob Hill) was very good, Fleur de Lys was delicious in every way. Citizen Cake (Hayes) was fun for lunch…great soup (but the cupcakes were better at Kara's Cupcakes in Ghiradelli Sq). Terroir Wine Merchants (SoMa) and Arlequin (Hayes) for some of the oddest most incredibly delicious vin naturel out there.
Little Garden in Chinatown has good dry fry chow fun (but not as good as Asian Cafe Express). Chix wings at San Tung (Inner Sunset) were fab and worth the trip but get there by 11:15am. Cafe Claude (Union Sq) pours some decent wine and has good charcuterie and cheese plates.
Bar Crudo (NOPA) was a bust for us…no flavor. Crepe House (Hayes) for nutella and banana crepe…yum.

Well, I get you: I was recently focused on Montreal's (Canada) finest tables and despite this city being so blessed by numerous great tables, it is already about time that I jump into another Gastronomic destination. There comes a time when, as good as one city might stand before food, the tape reaches out it's recording dead end.
